While on tour a couple of weeks ago, I had a few hours to wander the city Memphis and was told that the National Civil Rights Museum was not to be missed. I can still not bring myself to go to the Holocaust Museum in DC, German-Jewish family history runs deep there, and it is always with trepidation that I go to museums with heavy subject matter even though I fully support the mission of said institutions, let us not forget history lest we are damned to repeat it.

So I just walked around the outside of the Lorraine Hotel, where Martin Luther King Jr. was shot down on April 4, 1968. It has been preserved and turned into the Museum. If a place can be quiet while children run and play, this would be the spot. My friend Steve and I were struck by the silence, in the midst of screams of joy, running feet, and buses moving about. It was a place of reflection for me, personal, searching, hopeful? I think we have come a long way, with miles to go, but time stopped for a moment at the Lorraine, never to be regained, nor ignored.
