An interesting experiment, especially to someone who used to smoke. Hope it helps.

Went back to 5th grade last week for the NYT, it still smells the same, antiseptic fear, for a story about the NC Teaching Fellows program, which gives high achieving high school students free in state college tuition in exchange for a 4 year commitment to teach in the public school system. The program has been a great success, with 60% of the program’s teachers remaining in the public school system 20 years later.

I spent the day with John Williams and his 5th grade class, through science, math, reading, spanish and recess, just taking in the atmosphere and remembering how hard, important, and at times thankless, being a elementary school teacher can be.

Thanks for the hospitality.

In an old and revered journalistic tradition, with a modern twist, I spent move in day on the campus UNC-CH. The twist was that the focus of the article would be the rise in corporations hiring students to help them promote their products on campus. At UNC, American Eagle had 3 campus ambassadors, and a bunch of their friends, helping kids move in to their dorms and giving out coupons in another corporate promotion.

So I spent the early part of the day wandering campus with the volunteers and ambassadors as they helped out, moved kids in and handed out the coupons, while also looking for other examples of the corporate push onto academic campuses.

The later part of the night, starting at 11pm, was spent at the local Super Target, who would be busing kids from the UNC campus to the store in Durham, for sales and sales. Thousands took advantage of the free and the combination shopping spree and dance party was one of the more surreal events I have photographed in quite some time.

Strangely enough, the whole thing started in Charleston, SC at a GOP political rally. I had been asked by the New York Times to go to Charleston, photograph the rally and then head up the coast to see what was happening, if anything, with the hurricane known as Irene. This was Tuesday, when it was still unsure which way the storm would go. By Thursday, when I was heading out, it was obvious that Irene was on her way and that I would be staying for a few days along the coast. I started out from Charleston early Friday morning, after a late night of filing the political story, and headed up the coast with the intention of ending the day in Morehead City to wait for the storm. After stopping along the way to shoot storm prep in a few towns, I got a call from the NYT photo desk to meet reporter Campbell Robertson in Coinjock, NC, just a few miles across the Currituck Sound from the Outer Banks, where we would hole up through the storm with Louis Davis, the owner of the Coinjock Marina and Restaurant, and his employees as they took care of several million dollars worth of charter fishing boats. Ropes had to be retied and checked to make sure the rising and falling waters of the hurricane did not take them away.

This was my first hurricane on the coast, I have have sat through several inland, so I was a bit nervous, but more excited. I had rain gear, I had gas and food, so what me worry? The folks at the Marina welcomed us Friday night and as the storm hit Saturday morning, went to work on the docks.

They were fully confident that the boats would be safe, Louis had basically grown up on the marina grounds and lives there now, but with a hurricane comes a storm surge that fills tributaries with water and then when the winds shift as the storm moves through, all that water comes back out and the chances of the restaurant and dock store flooding were high.

Louis stayed on the phone all day as captains and friends called in to check on everything. The weather stations were constantly checked via TV and the internet, all powered by a generator since the power went out at 2am or so Saturday morning.

When we all went to sleep late Saturday night, the water in the canal had risen within inches of the dock and store and when we awoke around 6am to clearing skies, the store had flooded, with 6 to 8 inches of water over the plywood floor.

Luckily the water had not reached the restaurant and after a quick assessment of the damage, the crew got to the work of getting things back to normal.

You can read Campbell’s much richer description of the days here.

Lastly, I would like to thank Louis, Wendy, JW, Bruce, Susie and JD for their hospitality and letting a couple of landlubbers spend the hurricane with them, it was an experience I will not soon forget.

Spent a couple days in Greensboro for the New York Times photographing what has become a bit of a battlefield in the college or not wars.

Many high schools have cut back on their vocational training classes over the last few years as the push to get all kids into four year colleges has increased. But now, by some estimates, 2 million unfilled manufacturing jobs in the US, some are questioning whether we should be sending all kids to college, whether they are fit for it or not.

The story focused on Matt Kelly who was failing high school until he went to Weaver Academy, a magnet high school, where he could take metal work, car repair and carpentry classes as well as finish his standard education. He excelled and now has a scholarship to go to a 2 year associate’s program at a local community college where he will be trained to hopefully work one of the many highly skilled machining jobs in the area.

The job took me from Weaver Academy, to Guilford Technical Community College, above, where they train folks to enter the manufacturing world, and then to a local company which makes parts for the military and NASA, to name a couple.

An interesting and timely topic, and I know from experience, that some folks just ain’t cut out for college, at least not right away, and a trade can take you a long way until you are ready to figure out how you are going to spend the rest of your life.

It would be fair to say that it is hard these days to get multiple days to work on an assignment, especially from a newspaper. Add to that, a rather complex story involving city budgets, state government spending, cutbacks, city services and a council that has to balance in all and you have a story that could take many weeks to tell accurately.

Mayor Bill Saffo looks over a draft of the city’s budget as cuts are discussed

This is what happened when an editor I have worked with for years from the NYT called me and asked if I could dedicate a few days a month over the course of 4 or 5 months to photographing an in depth look at how small cities are dealing with state and federal budget cuts in the midst of the ongoing recession. Wilmington, NC was the spot and I said yes. I would have particular assignments within the days I would be there but it was also left up to me to interpret what the reporter, Kevin Sack, and I found once we were on the ground.

Road repairs have fallen behind as the city’s budget has been slashed to come to a balance

What resulted was a detailed look at how a relatively well off city deals with the painful cutbacks that must happen as their budgets shrink. Wilmington was chosen as it was doing quite well before the recession, unlike obvious choices such as Rocky Mount, NC or Detroit. This way we could show direct correlation between the cuts in city budgets and how they deal with them.

It was an absolute pleasure to work on this, with the independence and trust the editors put in me, the helpful guidance of Kevin Sack to make sure I got the details right and simply the time to get it all on film, or CF card.

Read Kevin’s excellent story here, see the NYT slideshow here, and see a multimedia presentation of all the issues here. Below are several more of my favorite photos from the story.

Firefighters and police officers hace not received raises in over 3 years and have had to deal with equipment failures in such important things as a fire engine and in car cameras, and an increase in downtown crime as more ABC permits have been issued.

But life goes on with events such as the Azalea Festival and tourism at the waterfront still going strong

None the less, construction has slowed downtown and vacant properties have had to wait for revival

In the end city officials, such as city manager Sterling Cheatham and mayor Bill Saffo, below, were about to find money for a new fire engine by cutting into the rainy day funds, but many other wants and needs of the city will have to wait for better days.

Headed out to Raleigh last week for the New York Times to cover some of the heavy damage from the series of tornados that devastated many areas of the state. It had been a while since I had covered a story like this and it always fills me with a bit of apprehension at the idea of asking people to let me document what could have been the worst day of their lives. But as I have usually found, people are so open to letting you in and telling you what happened, that they all are safe and hope that you get their story out. Thank you.

Shaw University, the oldest HBCU in the country, took a lot of hits from the storm and was forced to cancel the remainder of the semester, leaving some students wondering where to go until they could get home. By the time I got there, many of the students had left already, but a few students form Florida and the Bahamas played basketball as they waited to catch rides and flights out that night

The worst part of the Raleigh story was at Stony Brook North Mobile Home Park, where 4 children were killed by a falling tree while they huddled with relatives in their home. No one was allowed in the park when I was there, but the Salvation Army had set up a camp across the street and was handing out food and clothing to residents as they waited to get back in and see what, if anything, was left of their homes.

All in all, a very sad day for the state(s) that were hit by the line of storms and I wish all the families who suffered good wishes as they try to get their lives back in order. I also hope that this story is not forgotten and the inevitable trials that will occur as people try and rebuild do not go unnoticed.

Lee Calhoun has spent over 30 years collecting old southern apple varieties and planting them in his orchard in hopes of sustaining the breeds. Around the Japanese style house he built 40 years ago with his wife and son, he has planted and sustained many types of apples long forgotten, or never known, by most people.

Mr. Calhoun has has espaliered most of his collection, planting the trees quite close together, trained to wires, and keeping them pruned and at a 45 degree angle, which makes them flower and fruit more efficiently.

Although most of the trees in the orchards are grown in this method, he has a few old trees, over 20 years old, that have been grafted to include 6 to 8 different types of apples on one tree, a breed for each large branch.

I spent a few hours wandering through the trees, wishing they had fruit, and watching Mr. Calhoun trim his crop, keeping them short, as he says if they get too tall he will not be able to maintain the trees in his older age.

It was also a(nother) lesson in not pre-visualizing an assignment before you get there. When someone says apple orchard, I, and I would expect many others, see in their minds neat rows of old trees stretching out towards the horizon, ancient branches reaching upward to the sun. Apparently, almost all commercial apple orchards are arranged like Mr. Calhoun’s, too hard to trim the old, high trees, safety concerns for the workers, etc. A lesson learned, but no harm done. It was a pleasure to try and imagine how the trees will look ripe with fruit once the warmer weather arrives.

Just before the holidays, I spent a bit of time with Brian OliverSmith, the ceo of Urban Planet Mobile, for the NYT business section. His company offers language and SAT prep classes to clients worldwide via text message. Everyday they will send you a text with a link to your 1 minute lesson, or they can send it as a ringtone, for those without mobile internet, ie most of the world. One thing that stuck out in my mind was his comment that creating this service for smart phones would cut him out of most of the world and that they had worked really hard with sound engineers to compress the lessons into ringtone sized files so as that they can be sent nearly anywhere in the world. Very cool.
