Charles and Laureen Braxton worked hard all their lives, but after retirement, Mr. Braxton has some medical problems that put them behind on bills and life’s other expenses. When they were nearly unable to pay for food one month, they headed to Catholic Charities which helped them stretch their budget. 61 percent of North Carolinians older than 60 have incomes that are low enough to make them eligible for the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) program, which is part of the federal government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, an updated model of the former food stamps program.

A few weeks ago, new client AARP Bulletin sent me out to the Braxton’s home to spend the day with them and illustrate some of what senior couples go through to make ends meet. It was a lovely way to spend a day, talking about jobs past, looking through family albums and watching Mrs. Braxton work on hand sewn dolls that she hopes to sell at local markets to supplement their income. Just want to thank the Braxtons for their hospitality and Michael Wichita and Ilene Bellovin at AARP for the work. Read the article here for more info and check out a few more photos below.

An interesting experiment, especially to someone who used to smoke. Hope it helps.

Went back to 5th grade last week for the NYT, it still smells the same, antiseptic fear, for a story about the NC Teaching Fellows program, which gives high achieving high school students free in state college tuition in exchange for a 4 year commitment to teach in the public school system. The program has been a great success, with 60% of the program’s teachers remaining in the public school system 20 years later.

I spent the day with John Williams and his 5th grade class, through science, math, reading, spanish and recess, just taking in the atmosphere and remembering how hard, important, and at times thankless, being a elementary school teacher can be.

Thanks for the hospitality.

So a couple of days before my birthday, I got a call from Time Magazine asking if I was free for a day or 2 shoot. Yes, I was, and excited too, I have never done an assignment for Time before, only had a photo run as stock years ago. The story was about some NC politicians trying to cut funding for public Pre-K programs even though it has been shown over and over that Pre-K is incredibly important for kids, especially those from at risk communities or households.I would be going to Project Enlightenment in Raleigh and spend the day, it did end up being my birthday, with a class making lit, reportage photos of daily activities. Turned out great and they ran 4 photos, including one on the table of contents page, a full page, and 2 half page spreads which you can see below.

A few more photos are below and I want to take a moment to thank Kim Jackson for welcoming me into her classroom and Natalie, and everyone else, at Time for being great to work with and trusting me to do the shoot in the way I saw fit. A pleasure all around.

In an old and revered journalistic tradition, with a modern twist, I spent move in day on the campus UNC-CH. The twist was that the focus of the article would be the rise in corporations hiring students to help them promote their products on campus. At UNC, American Eagle had 3 campus ambassadors, and a bunch of their friends, helping kids move in to their dorms and giving out coupons in another corporate promotion.

So I spent the early part of the day wandering campus with the volunteers and ambassadors as they helped out, moved kids in and handed out the coupons, while also looking for other examples of the corporate push onto academic campuses.

The later part of the night, starting at 11pm, was spent at the local Super Target, who would be busing kids from the UNC campus to the store in Durham, for sales and sales. Thousands took advantage of the free and the combination shopping spree and dance party was one of the more surreal events I have photographed in quite some time.

Strangely enough, the whole thing started in Charleston, SC at a GOP political rally. I had been asked by the New York Times to go to Charleston, photograph the rally and then head up the coast to see what was happening, if anything, with the hurricane known as Irene. This was Tuesday, when it was still unsure which way the storm would go. By Thursday, when I was heading out, it was obvious that Irene was on her way and that I would be staying for a few days along the coast. I started out from Charleston early Friday morning, after a late night of filing the political story, and headed up the coast with the intention of ending the day in Morehead City to wait for the storm. After stopping along the way to shoot storm prep in a few towns, I got a call from the NYT photo desk to meet reporter Campbell Robertson in Coinjock, NC, just a few miles across the Currituck Sound from the Outer Banks, where we would hole up through the storm with Louis Davis, the owner of the Coinjock Marina and Restaurant, and his employees as they took care of several million dollars worth of charter fishing boats. Ropes had to be retied and checked to make sure the rising and falling waters of the hurricane did not take them away.

This was my first hurricane on the coast, I have have sat through several inland, so I was a bit nervous, but more excited. I had rain gear, I had gas and food, so what me worry? The folks at the Marina welcomed us Friday night and as the storm hit Saturday morning, went to work on the docks.

They were fully confident that the boats would be safe, Louis had basically grown up on the marina grounds and lives there now, but with a hurricane comes a storm surge that fills tributaries with water and then when the winds shift as the storm moves through, all that water comes back out and the chances of the restaurant and dock store flooding were high.

Louis stayed on the phone all day as captains and friends called in to check on everything. The weather stations were constantly checked via TV and the internet, all powered by a generator since the power went out at 2am or so Saturday morning.

When we all went to sleep late Saturday night, the water in the canal had risen within inches of the dock and store and when we awoke around 6am to clearing skies, the store had flooded, with 6 to 8 inches of water over the plywood floor.

Luckily the water had not reached the restaurant and after a quick assessment of the damage, the crew got to the work of getting things back to normal.

You can read Campbell’s much richer description of the days here.

Lastly, I would like to thank Louis, Wendy, JW, Bruce, Susie and JD for their hospitality and letting a couple of landlubbers spend the hurricane with them, it was an experience I will not soon forget.

Shot my first assignment for Inc. Magazine a few weeks ago on the Cary, NC campus of SAS, a software company that has been rated the best place to work years on end. Employer provided day care, free health clinic and insurance, cheap food, the list goes on. I had been there before but the assignment brief was slightly different this time, so off I went with a 13 item shot list, a sweat towel, it was over 100, and instructions to shoot whatever else caught my eye, music to my ears.
