3rd place in “Best Multimedia Project” from NCPA

I was honored to receive 3rd place in the “Best Multimedia Project” for Community Papers with over 10,00 circulation category from the North Carolina Press Association for my project “Finding Faith”. It was my first large multimedia project involving large amounts of audio from various sources, so it was great to see the effort rewarded.

Thanks to all who let me in the door and helped me with the production, as well as the Independent Weekly for giving me the time and space to make it happen.

Driving through south western North Carolina on assignment the other day, could not pass it up, it had to be 100 feet tall.

New Work: Faith on Chapel Hill Street

I have seen a man take his first step toward Christ in the same building my dad and I bought my first bike, sold to us by Max, who at the time was God to me, the older, wiser biker of 16. Less than 100 yards away, just last year a good friend held a blood-soaked sweatshirt to the leg of a stranger to try and stop the heavy bleeding from a gun-shot wound. The stranger made it, the bike shop did not.

The 1000 and 1200 blocks of West Chapel Hill Street in Durham have been many things to many people over the years—auto shops, gas stations, abandoned buildings. Now there are five houses of worship on these two forlorn blocks, as well as the remains of the Durham Food Co-op—soon to be an acupuncture clinic—and several new businesses resurrecting the empty storefronts.

Muslims quietly observe Jumah, or Friday prayer services, sandwiched between a few Christian churches where call-and-response songs echo down the cracked street Wednesdays and Sundays. The people are searching for a new faith or seeking confirmation that their beliefs will get them to heaven when their time is up. Much like the city that surrounds them, we have all come a long way, hoping this time to get it right.

Worked over the last couple of months on a story about 2 or 3 blocks in Durham, NC that have 5 storefront houses of worship on them, 4 Christian churches and one mosque. I was welcomed by most to try and show what goes on behind their doors and get a better idea of why folks come down a couple of days a week and give their God their all.

It was also the 1st time I have done extensive audio recording on a personal project and the results of that can be seen here in a slideshow. All feedback is welcomed, really, let me know what you think.
