There are those places we live that seem to have a greater impact on our lives than other homes, or cities, that we may have spent more time in. They have strong memory associations, stories and scars. Although their period in the timeline may be short, their impact is immeasurable in the further course of our lives. This was one of those spots. Huge rats, falling down house, back yard full of ramps we built, good friends, never forget.

The day came and went again, our 8th annual Chatham County Showdown. A little rain in the morning, 10 inches in the bowl when it ended, but with 8 people, 2 squeegees, a screw bucket and 3 leaf blowers, it was dry in 2 hours and the festivities commenced.

So we, Marshall and myself, left Friday after work and drove to Cherokee, NC picking up James en route in Greensboro. Plan was to head to Cherokee to check out the new Artisan park Saturday morning and head into Asheville after to hit up Thrashville in the afternoon.Got to Cherokee, went [...]]]>

So we, Marshall and myself, left Friday after work and drove to Cherokee, NC picking up James en route in Greensboro. Plan was to head to Cherokee to check out the new Artisan park Saturday morning and head into Asheville after to hit up Thrashville in the afternoon.Got to Cherokee, went to the park to see if it was sleepable, and indeed, there was a nice grassy area above the big bowl that would sleep nicely.

Headed to the casino to see what all the hoopla was, and I still have no idea. So depressing, no live dealers, just acres of computer slots and neon lights. No photos of that, still gotta get the film developed in the T4 as the the standard rig was a bit too obvious. After a couple of cheapish drinks and some terrible karaoke that made the trip worthwhile, nothing like a tone deaf rendition of Shania Twain to end the night, we went back to the park and crawled into our sleeping bags in the damp grass. Just cool enough to sleep in the bag.

In about an hour the cops showed up, and after a bit of back and forth about there being no empty hotels for us to sleep at, he walked off with a “don’t mess nothin’ up” farewell and headed off. We slept, only woken once by a teenage couple yelling and falling down in the dark of the bowls. 7:30 rolled around, we got up and were skating by 8:15 after some BK coffee, thanks Marshall.

James killed it as usual (see the tail slide and smith grind above for evidence)

After a quick dip in the river we headed to Asheville, where to be honest, I spent the whole time skating and not shooting photos at Thrashville. Sometimes you just gotta do it. If you know someone, you better ask them, that place is amazing.

Thanks for the hospitality to everyone at Thrashville and to the Cherokee police department for letting us rest in peace.

In the next few days leading up to the show, I am going to post some images from the wall and explain a little about them and why I chose the photograph for the show.

Frank has forgotten more tricks than you will ever know, or at least refuses to do them anymore, and learns new ones at a rate that drives me nuts. I have beaten him in s-k-a-t-e maybe twice, but only once that I can remember. For me, he is one of those people you meet and it just clicks. My favorite person to skate with. We lived together in Chapel Hill for a few years. Original Hawkwind. He let me skate his car, slept against a jersey barrier in Kentucky with me for a couple of days to wake up and skate at 3am, and was willing to pull off the road so I could make blurry photos of smoke belching factories in Ohio.

He can build amazing ramps, as you can see in the above photo, and ain’t the half of it.

A friend like it should be.
