Cpl. Luke Kirby was injured by a roadside bomb and now suffers from PTSD and possible traumatic brain injury. Due to his injuries, he is no longer able to remember details such as how to get from place to place. He spends his last days as a Marine, he was being discharged, working out in the battalion gym.

The second post from my War at Home series is up at BagNews Originals. This one deals with injured Marines recovering at the Wounded Warrior Battalion East.

It is a place of recovery for Marines who have left the hospital and are working out their future in or out of the military as many of them have been diagnosed with PTSD or TBI. I spent a couple of days there talking to Marines, such as Cpl. Kirby, about their injuries, and their future. Many would be going home as they were declared physically or mentally unfit for service and some would be reassigned within the Marines to duties that they could fulfill with the injuries sustained. I was limited somewhat by the fact that I was not allowed to go into the rooms to do interviews, they all had to be done in the rec room which did not quite lend itself to intimate conversation, but the men I met were open and honest and most still wanted to continue in the military. There were also many who slept most of the time due to boredom, there was really only TV and a pool table to keep them occupied between visits to the clinics and hospital, and medication for the injuries that left them drowsy.

It was brief but intense couple of days and I thank all those Marines who were willing to talk and be photographed.

Over the next week or 2, BagNews will be featuring selections from my ongoing “War at Home” series in the Originals section of the site.

Michael Shaw, who runs the site, and Alan Chin, who approached me about featuring the photos, post news photographs and discuss the implications of them and how we view and interpret the messages there in. 252nd comes home

In December of 2008 I photographed the deployment ceremony of Company D of the 1/252nd Combined Arms Battalion of the North Carolina National Guard, part of the 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team, as they got ready to head out to Iraq.

This past weekend they returned home to Sanford, NC. Welcome back.

Interview on dvafoto about War at Home project

A couple of months ago, M. Scott Brauer, an old friend of mine from NY who now lives and works in China, asked me if I would do an interview on my ongoing War at Home project for his and Matt Lutton’s blog dvafoto. I agreed and the interview has been posted this morning.
