Army Cpl. Pruitt A. Rainey, of Haw River, N.C., died on July 13, 2008, of wounds sustained when his outpost was attacked by small-arms fire and rocket propelled grenades from enemy forces in Wanat, Afghanistan.

8 other US soldiers were killed in the attack in a month that sawthe fatalities in Afghanistan exceed those taken by the US military operating in Iraq.

Cpl. Rainey was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503d Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy.

He was 22.
